The Lucky Country
Australia is often referred to as the "lucky country", with temperate
climate, impressive landscape, growing economy, political stability
and a quality of life envied by many. As a result, up to 100,000
people will choose to migrate to Australia in 2002. Currently, around
25 percent of the population was born outside Australia. It is truly
a multi-cultural society that embraces those from other nations.
Geography
Australia is known around the world for its stunning landscapes.
Surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Australia has many
animals and plants that are unique on the planet. One of the oldest
continents, Australia is as wide as the distance from Kuala Lumpur
to Taipei and as long as the distance from Singapore to Manila.
Australia is the only country to occupy an entire continent.
Political System
Australia is a stable democracy, with compulsory voting for those
over 18 years of age, ensuring a representative government. Freedom
of speech is a cornerstone of any democracy and Australians have
no hesitation in expressing their views on political and controversial
issues in Australia.
Multi-cultural and safe
People from all over the world come to Australia to enjoy one of
the world's highest standards of living. Australia offers world
class education facilities, exceptional health services, spectacular
natural environment and friendly, safe neighborhoods. Australia
has one of the lowest crime rates in the Western World. Australia
has a vibrant heritage, is rich in the arts and is renowned for
its sporting achievements.
Health
The Australia Government provides help with medical expenses through
a scheme called Medicare. Free public hospital care, help with the
cost of out-of-hospital care and subsidised medicines are the services
available under Medicare.
Education
Australia's education system is managed by a national body to ensure
a consistent standard of quality education. The Australian education
system is divided broadly into five areas:
Pre-school
Primary School
Secondary / High School
Secondary Colleges
Vocational Training University or other tertiary institutions
Schooling is compulsory for students in most states and territories
until the age of 15. Although students are able to leave at that
time, almost all students continue until they have completed at
least their 10 year qualifications, and most complete their year-12
studies.
Employment
Because the geography and culture of Australia is so diverse, the
job opportunities available here are incredibly diverse too. You
may even be able to gain recognition in Australia for the educational
and trade qualifications you gained before entering Australia. This
will make finding employment even easier. Job vacancies are easy
to locate. They are listed in the jobs or Positions Vacant / Employment
sections in Australian newspapers. There are private employment
agencies listed in the telephone directory.
Australia needs your skills!
Despite a global slowdown, Australia's economy remains one of
the strongest in the world and with over 100,000 jobs being advertised
each week, employers need skilled candidates.
