The Economic and Social Benefits of Immigration

The immigration policy of Canada works towards maximizing the economic and social benefits of migration to Canada by achieving annual immigration targets; reuniting immigrant family members; selecting business immigrants and other immigrants capable of adapting to the Canadian labour market; admitting visitors and foreign students who stimulate the demand for goods and services; and admitting temporary workers who fill skills gaps in the Canadian labour market and who transfer occupational skills to Canadian workers. Economic immigrants are selected for their potential contributions to the Canadian economy. While these economic benefits may be the most tangible outcomes, Canada also benefits from the strong communities and social stability that reunited families support, and the cultures, traditions and knowledge that immigrants and refugees contribute to Canadian society. Immigrants also play an important role by building human capital, filling labour market gaps, and becoming active and responsible citizens.
